fight help

i need some help understanding the fight aspect of the game. Im at 1 xp needed to lvl, and I,m aware i need to fight either monster or kingdom. I went to fight a monster w/ about 16 various soldiers and lost 11. How can I tell what kind and/or size of the army i will need to kill a monster. I dont want to go back into battle under powered, but i dont want to waste time building an army stronger than is needed.

also I started the game w/ 40 land, and now have 36 total land. Does this mean I was attacked by someone or might it be a result of losing to the monster?
How can you tell?

Down on the main page you can see your defense statistics and logs. From there you can tell in someone attacked you.
Buy battling a monster you cannot lose land.
To see your chances of killing a monster SCOUT him from the monster's detail page.(This is your only way of seeing how strong is a monster)
